本標本は約400mの水深から得られたが,チリのアイセン地方では水深3〜25mから数個体が得られている(Zama and Cárdenas, 1984)。

Description:

Body elongate, with depressed head and slender tail. Head triangular in dorsal view, rather small, about 4 times in SL. Head and body armoured with spinous bony plates; body cross section octagonal anteriorly, hexagonal posteriorly; longitudinal rows of about 40 bony plates covering body; anterior plates of dorsal row with larger spines. Series of small spines on head. Three pairs of small barbels on posterior part of maxilla; many much smaller barbels on lower jaw, chin and isthmus. Prominent two pits on nape. Mouth inferior, upper jaw more anteriorly projecting than lower jaw, posterior margin of upper jaw extending to anterior margin of eye. Interorbital region narrow, furrowed, its width nearly as large as eye diameter. Two nostrils, anterior one tubular, posterior one a round pore. Five triangular spines on eye margin between sclera and cornea. Lateral line fairly straight from temporal region to caudal base. Gill-rakers small, nub-like. Pseudobranchiae present. Villiform teeth in bands on both jaws. Fine teeth scattered on vomer and palatines. Pectoral fin large, its length 1.3 times in head. Pelvic fin slender, its length slightly shorter than pectoral fin, situated just below posterior insertion of pectoral fin. Two short-based, dorsal fins separated by 3 bony plates. Anal fin similar to second dorsal fin in size and shape. Posterior margin of caudal fin somewhat round. Body dark brown dorsally and paler ventrally, five distinct cross-bars on back, with less distinct dark markings on sides and nape.
Distribution:
Chilean Patagohia; known also from Argentine Patagonian Falkland, and Straits of Magellan (Norman, 1937a).
Remarks:
Our specimen was obtained from deep water (about 400 m), although 4 specimens (66.8-125.0 mm SL) were obtained from 3-25 m depth in the Aysén Region, Chile (Zama and Cárdenas, 1984).
