Head large, depressed. Body fairly round, tapering posteriorly. Snout rather long, wide, with a central notch. Rostral projection short, round, with about 10 small spines, posteriormost one largest and directing backward. Eye rather small, about 6 timse in head. Mouth wide, posterior margin of upper jaw extending to about half-way between tip of snout and anterior margin of eye. Upper jaw projecting anterior to lower jaw. Villiform teeth in bands on both jaws. Fine villiform teeth on vomer and palatines. Head armed with bony plates and spines. One preocular spine, 1 postocular spine, 1 frontal spine, 2 parietal spines, 1 nuchal spine and 1 humeral spine. Two (1 strong and 1 weak) spines on preopercle, 2 (1 strong and 1 moderate) spines on opercle. Nostrils situated closely to each other, nearer to tip of snout than to anterior margin of eye; anterior one round with a long flap posteriorly, posterior one with a short flap around circumference. Interorbital region concave, its width slightly less than eye diameter. Dorsal fin fairly high, spines srtong. Second dorsal and anal fins similar in size and shape. Pectoral fin elongate, with lowermost 3 rays separate. Pelvic fin long, nearly or just reaching anus. Caudal fin subtruncate. Small ctenoid scales on body. Lateral line fairly straight, running parallel and close to dorsal profile.
Distribution:
Off southern Brazil to central Argentina.
Remarks:
Prionotus nudigla Ginsburg is also recorded from Argentine waters (Menni, Ringuelet and Aramburu, 1984).
