Body deep anteriorly, about 2.5 times in SL, low posteriorly, about 4 times in SL at anal fin origin, and strongly compressed with large fins and considerably projecting snout. A pair of spines on snout in front of eyes, becoming obscure with growth. Granular areas around eye, on opercular and temporal regions. Head large, about 3 times in SL. Snout rather long, its dorsal profile strongly concave. Interorbital region narrow, furrowed. Lips thick, fleshy. Mouth small, teeth villiform in both jaws. Eye small, 6-8 times in head. Gill-opening narrow. Gill-rakers short. Pseudobranchiae present. Lateral line more or less distinct, running nearly parallel with dorsal profile from above gill-opening to caudal peduncle. Body completely naked, and skin tough. Dorsal fin starting from just above eye; dorsal spines well developed, locked in erect position. Second dorsal fin fairly high, continuous with first dorsal fin, distal margin rounded. Anal fin also fairly high, distal margin rounded, height and base length slightly less than in second dorsal fin. Pectoral fin large, several lowermost rays thickened, its length slightly shorter than head length. Pelvic fin also large, situated slightly behind level of posterior insertion of pectoral fin base, its length about equal to pectoral fin length.
Distribution:
Both sides of southern South America from Uruguay to Peru.
Remarks:
Congiopodus kienerii Savage is also recognized in Chilean waters (Bahamonde and Pequeño, 1975).
