チリ パタゴニア;アルゼンチンから(Menni, Ringuelet and Aramburu, 1984)も,ペルー(Chirichigno, 1974)からも知られている。
備 考:
H. dactylopterus lahilleiとはほんの少しより大きな頭,より幅広くより深い溝を有する両眼間隔域,より細い尾柄部,より小さい鱗,より短い胸鰭と腹鰭などで区別される。

Body elongate and compressed. Head large, about 2.5 times in SL. Snout moderate, about equal to eye diameter. Eye large, about 5 times in HL. Two nostrils, anterior one with a papilla. Mouth large, end of maxilla extending to below posterior margin of eye. Villiform teeth in bands on both jaws, palatine and vomer. One pair of small projections with minute teeth on anterior part of upper jaw. V-shaped vomerine teeth in band. One nasal spine, one preocular spine, one supraocular spine, one coronal spine, one postocular spine, one tympanic spine, one parietal spine, one nuchal spine and two humeral spines present. Two opercular spines and four preopercular spines present. Gill and buccal cavity black. Pseudobranchiae present. Gill-rakers well developed. Small ctenoid scales on body, head opercle, maxilla. Dorsal and anal spines strong and pungent. Pectoral fin large, round, lowermost 8 rays unbranched. Posterior end of pectoral fin reaches below last dorsal spine. Anus situated at end of pelvic fins. Anal fin origin situated below second or third fin rays of second dorsal fin. Single lateral line running from upper insertion of opercle to caudal fin base. Dorsal fin and dorsal part of body with irregular dark marks.
Distribution:
Chile and Juan Fernandez. Occurrence from Argentina (Menni, Ringuelet and Aramburu, 1984), and Peru (Chirichigno, 1974), are also reported.
Remarks:
Distinguished from H. dactylopterus lahillei by slightly larger head, rather broader and more deeply grooved interorbital region, more slender caudal peduncle, smaller scales and shorter pectoral and pelvic fins (Norman, 1937a).
