Material examined:
2 from Chile (1050.0-1282.4 mm SL), FAKU CP 221, 300.
Description:
D ca. 170, 185; P1 9, 10; GR 4+10=14,4+8=12; BR 6, 7; C 8, 9.
HL 11.1, 13.1% of SL: ED 3.2, 4.0; BD 13.8, 14.8; SN 3.0, 4.8; IO 2.3, 2.6; UJ 4.1, 4.9; CP 0.7, 0.8; P1L 3.8, 4.7; P2L 3.8, 4.7; D1H 7.6, 7.8.
Body extremely elongate and compressed, gradually decreasing in height posteriorly. Anus situated about midway between snout and caudal fin base. Mouth small and extremely protrusible. Several small canine teeth directing backward on both jaws. No teeth on vomer or palatines. Dorsal fin rather low in height, its base very long and situated along entire dorsal margin. No anal fin. Caudal fin week and elongate with 8-9 unbranched soft fin rays. Pectoral fin weak and short. Pelvic fin rudimentary with or without a small fin ray. Scales represented by small bony processes embedded in skin, those on ventral side spinescent. Lateral line originating from above upper margin of opercle, gradually dropping to near ventral profile at caudal fin base. Each lateral line pore with a spine. Body entirely silvery white in fresh condition, pale brown in preserved condition. Tips of snout and lower jaw, and forehead jet black. Caudal fin and dorsal fin base blackish. Pectoral fins and dorsal fin semitransparent.
Distribution:
Mediterranean Sea, eastern Atlantic to South Africa, Japan and New Zealand (Heemstra and Kannemeyer, 1984). The occurrence of this species in Chilean waters seems to be a new record. Trachipterus altivelis Kner and Trachipterus fukusakii Fitch have been previously recorded from Chile by Bahamonde and Pequeño (1975).
Remarks:
Like the related oar-fish (family Regalecidae), the trachipterids are members of the off-shore epipelagic community as defined by Parin (1968).
