南大西洋の南大洋域,ニュージーランド周辺,インド洋南部からも記録されている(Nafpaktitis and Paxton, 1968)。
備 考:
南アフリカに分布するL. chavesiとは前部臀鰭発光器の位置により,またモーリタニア沖のL. pontifixとは尾部下部発光器の大きさで識別される(Nafpaktitis et al., 1977)。

A relatively large myctophid fish. Body rather robust, elongate and slightly compressed. Head length 1.3to 1.5 times its height. Snout bluntly rounded. Mouth large, corner reaching level with posterior eye margin, just short of preopercular margin. Eye large, its diameter 2.8 times in head length. Teeth on both jaws, vomer and palatine villiform. Scales large, thin, ctenoid and easily deciduous. Gill-rakers long and slender. Pectoral fin short. Base of dorsal fin longer than that of anal fin. Origin of dorsal fin immediately anterior to a vertical line through base of outermost ray of pelvic fin. Origin of anal fin behind a vertical line through posterior end of dorsal fin base. Lateral line obvious. Supracaudal (SUGL) and infracaudal (INGL) luminous organs large, undivided, bordered by black pigment; 2nd suprapectoral organ(PVO2) below level of upper end of pectoral fin base; first (PO1), 2nd (PO2), and 3rd pectoral organs (PO3) not on a straight line; anterior anal organs (AOa) 6, not extending beyond anal fin base; pectoral organs (PO) 5, ventral organs (VO) 5 anal ergans (AO) 9. Body uniformly black, each fin slightly blackish.
Distribution:
South Atlantic, recorded also from New Zealand and southern Indian Ocean (Nafpaktitis and Paxton, 1968).
Remarks:
This species differs from closely related species, L. chavesi off South Africa by the position of anterior anal organs, and from L. pontifix off Mauritania by the size of infracaudal luminous gland (Nafpaktitis et al., 1977).
