Body oblong, compressed, depth 4.0-4.5 in SL. Head large, length about 3.2 in SL. Snout equal to orbit in length. Eye large, 3 in HL. Mouth small, oblique, extending as far back as anterior margin of eye. Small teeth on both jaws, maxilla remarkably extending to posterior margin of eye. Lower jaw projecting. Pseudobranchiae present. Gill-rakers long, each finely serrated. Scales deciduous. Lateral line indistinct. Luminous organ well developed on abdominal side and cheek; 12 pairs along belly between pectoral and pelvic, 5-6 between pelvic and anal, then a gap followed by 24-25 organs ending near base of caudal; 1 above gap; a second row of 9 larger organs above first row between pectoral origin and pelvic origin. Six small organs on side of isthmus, 1 before and 3 behind eye, one small pair on chin. Large 6 on branchiostegal membrane. Origin of dorsal fin nearer to base of caudal fin than tip of snout. Adipose fin low and long. Anal fin origin situated under end of dorsal fin base. Pectoral fin immediately behind gill-opening. Pelvic fins situated far behind, its origin under dorsal fin origin.
Distribution:
Bathypelagic waters of the world.
Remarks:
A luminous organ just in front of the base of pectoral fin is absent in specimens examined here and by Wheeler (1978) but present in Leim and Scott (1966). Thirty three specimens of this species (32.0-54.5 mm SL) were obtained from near Isla de Chiloe (Navarro and Pequeño, 1979).
