Body slender and compressed. Head moderately large, about 3.5 in SL. Snout round and short, slightly shorter than eye diameter, about 5 in HL. Head large, 3.6-3.8 in SL. Eye rather large about equal to interorbital width, 6.1-6.8 in HL. Two nostrils, close each other. Mouth oblique and very large, end of maxilla extending to four-fifths of head. Snout projecting forward. Both jaws subequal in length under projected snout. Minute uniserial teeth on both jaws. Villiform teeth on tongue and palatines. No teeth on vomer. Pseudobranchiae present. Gill-rakers very well developed and long with fine serrations on each raker. Very thin, rather large cycloid scales on body. Scales very deciduous. Dorsal fin origin situated about middle of body excluding caudal fin, its base short. Pectoral fin situated at lower part of body. Pelvic fin small and situated posteriorly, its origin slightly anterior to dorsal fin origin. Anal fin small, its origin below posterior end of dorsal fin. Anus just in front of anal fin. Caudal fin weakly forked. Lateral line obscure. Dorsal half of body blackish blue, silvery white in lateral and ventral parts. All fins transparent.
Distribution:
Off southern Brazil to off northern Argentine Patagonia.
Remarks:
Important fish in Argentina. Concentrated on from off Rio de La Plata to off Peninsula Vardes, migrating southward in September to October and northward in November to January (Bellisio, López and Torno, 1979).
