Pseudoxenomystaxとは,本属は口を閉じても上顎が露出しないこと,および背鰭起部の位置がより後方にあることにより区別される。Figueiredo and Menezes(1978)によれば本種の胸鰭は15〜17軟条。

Description:
BD 7.4% of TL; HL 15.8; PreAn 51.3; PreD 24.2; ED 11.0% of HL; IO 19.9; SN 25.8; UJ 40.7; P1L 27.9.
Body very elongate, cylindrical in cross section; posterior part of body strongly compressed. Anterior nostril tube-like, situated near tip of snout; posterior nostril situated anterior to eye, hiatus without flap. Mouth large, end of upper jaw reaching level of posterior margin of eye. Snout blunt. Teeth on upper jaw concealed by lower jaw when mouth closed; teeth on both jaws and vomer small and strong, forming narrow band; no teeth on tongue. Dorsal fin origin far posterior to pectoral fin base; dorsal fin end connected with caudal fin; anal fin, starting around midpart of body and its end connected with caudal fin; no pelvic fin; pectoral fin small and fan-shaped, composed of 13 soft rays. Body width increasing in posterior part of body. Anus just anterior to anal fin origin. Gill-opening short and narrow, its width about half distance between both gill-openings. Lateral line beginning from upper part of gill-cover and running straight along midpart of body. A series of sensory pores lined up on lateral line, their number about 120 and 44 to 46 anterior to anus. In preserved specimen, upper part of body bluish brown; lower part of body white; margins of dorsal, anal and caudal fins blackish.
Distribution:
Atlantic coast of southern South America: shallow waters on the continental shelf from Rio de Janeiro of Brazil to Bonaelensis area of northern Argentina.
Remarks:
This genus is distinguished from Pseudoxenomystax by the concealed upper jaw when mouth is closed and the posterior position of the dorsal fin origin. Figueiredo and Menezes (1978) described the number of pectoral fin rays of this species to be 15 to 17.
