Body with three-rooted immovable spines; 11〜12 spines in an approximate row from tip of snout to dorsal fin; spines at level of lower base of pectoral fin with tentacles. Several tentacles on chin and a short tentacle over eye. A short spine between left and right nostrils. Dorsal and anal fins very posterior on body. Caudal fin rounded. Body pale gray dorsally, pale yellow ventrally; many dark brown lines on dorsal side of body, forming hexagonal markings; a large black blotch above pectoral fin, a small one beneath posterior end of fin, these blotches encircled by pale line; a small black blotch edged with a pale line at base of dorsal fin; all fins pale yellow or pale grey.
Distribution:
From Bahamas to northeastern Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is easily distinguishable from other species of Chilomycterus by having large black blotches and dark brown hexagonal markings on the body. (Matsuura)
