Body deep and compressed, covered with scales having many small spines. First dorsal spine situated behind gill opening. Snout short, its length 3.2 in head length. Distance from tip of snout to dorsal origin longer than half of standard length. Gill opening relatively large, its lower edge reaching to level of lower part of pectoral base. Pelvis wide, its width 4〜5 in its length. Spines of dorsal and anal fins covered with small spines. Teeth on both jaws conical, arranged in a single row. Body pale brown with reticulated dark brown lines.
Distribution:
From Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico through Caribbean Sea to Suriname, inhabiting waters about 200〜900m deep.
Remarks:
This species is separable from H. meadi and H. goslinei by the wide pelvis and reticulate dark brown lines on the body. (Matsuura)
