Body elliptical and strongly compressed. Mouth small. Minute teeth in upper and lower jaws of blind side. Eyes on right side of body, very small. Dorsal and anal fins covered with skin, separated from caudal fin. Pectoral fin present only on ocular side, hidden beneath skin. Pelvic fins covered with skin and confluent with anal fin. Caudal fin rounded. Body and fins yellowish brown with many vertical black bars; 15 bars on body.

From Mexico to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is separable from other species of Gymnachirus by 15〜18 vertical bars on the body (Dawson, 1964). (Matsuura)
