Counts and measurements：D Ⅲ, 128～133; A Ⅰ, 107～109; P111. HL 12.1～15.2% of SL; body depth at P1 insertion 5.4～6.4; eye diameter 2.0～2.1; interorbital width 1.5～2.0; snout 4.6～6.0; predorsal 8.5～9.8; preanal 33.0～35.3.
特 徴：
（属）： 両眼間隔域は平らで，決して凹むことはない。尾鰭は腹鰭は全くない。側線は頭部後方で急に下降し，それから体の腹縁に沿って後方へ走る。鰓蓋の後部下縁はいくらか凹む。背鰭第1棘の長さは，眼径より大きい。臀鰭第1棘は小さい。（種）： タチオウ1種。
分 布：
三大洋の暖海域。地中海。模式産地-サウス・カロライナ。 （藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Genus)：Interorbital space flat, nerer concave. Both caudal and pelvic fins completely absent. Lateral line descendig steeply behind head and running backward along the ventral contour of body. Lower behind margin of gill cover somewhat concave. Length of first dorsal spine longer than eye diameter. First anal spine small. (Species)：One species, Trichiurus lepturus.
Distribution：
Warm waters of three major oceans and the Mediterranean. Type locality-South Carolina. (fujii)
