B. gobioidesと本種は61〜71の側線鱗数をもつが,背鰭軟条数で区別できる(B. gobioidesでは17〜18)(Ginsburg, 1955)。 (清水)
Distinctive characters:
(Family):Rostrum highly depressed. Two dorsal fins, separated completely. No infraorbital stay. Rostrum, eye surroundings, dorsal side of head smooth without any spination. (Genus):A large fleshy flap presents on end of maxillary. (Species):Orbit diameter shorter than rostral length. Large male has filamenteous 2nd dorsal spine. Lower jaw tip protruding extremely, including upper jaw. About 10 black blotches along lateral line.
Distribution:
Southern U.S.A. to north coasts of South America.
Remarks:
The present species and B. gobioides have 61〜71 lateral-line scales. Both are separable by their dorsal ray number (17〜18 in B. gobioides) (Ginsburg, 1955). (Shimizu)
