特 徴：
（科）：吻は著しく縦扁する。背鰭は2基で完全に分離する。眼下骨棚がない。吻，眼の周囲，頭部背面は平滑で棘がない。（属）：主上顎骨後端に大きい皮弁がある。（種）：眼径は吻長より短い。雄の大型個体では背鰭第2棘が糸状に伸長する。下顎先端は著しく突出し，上顎を含む。側線に沿い約10個の黒色斑がある。
分 布：
合衆国南部から南米大陸北岸。
備 考：
B. gobioidesと本種は61～71の側線鱗数をもつが，背鰭軟条数で区別できる（B. gobioidesでは17～18）（Ginsburg, 1955）。 （清水）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Rostrum highly depressed. Two dorsal fins, separated completely. No infraorbital stay. Rostrum, eye surroundings, dorsal side of head smooth without any spination. (Genus)：A large fleshy flap presents on end of maxillary. (Species)：Orbit diameter shorter than rostral length. Large male has filamenteous 2nd dorsal spine. Lower jaw tip protruding extremely, including upper jaw. About 10 black blotches along lateral line.
Distribution：
Southern U.S.A. to north coasts of South America.
Remarks：
The present species and B. gobioides have 61～71 lateral-line scales. Both are separable by their dorsal ray number (17～18 in B. gobioides) (Ginsburg, 1955). (Shimizu)
