Body oblong and compressed, body depth 3.2〜3.3 in SL. Mouth inferior, posterior end of upper jaw rounded and reaching beyond posterior margin of eye. Snout blunt. Eye with adipose eyelid. Pectoral fin long, with 7 detached thread-like lower rays. Base of anal fin relatively long, its length 4.6〜4.7 in SL. Caudal fin forked. Body silver-white; edges of first dorsal and caudal fins dusky; second dorsal and anal fins dusky yellow; pectoral and pelvic fins dark.
Distribution:
From southern Florida to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is similar to P. octonemus and P. virginicus but differs from the former by having 7 detached lower pectoral rays (against 8) and from the latter by the long anal fin base (4.6〜4.7 against 5.2〜5.8) and the rounded posterior end of upper jaw. (Matsuura)
