特 徴：
体は長く，側扁する。体長は体高の3.2～3.3倍。口は下位で大きく，上顎の後端はまるく，眼の後縁より後にある。吻端はまるく，眼には脂瞼が発達する。胸鰭は長く，下方の7軟条は上方の軟条から分離し，各鰭条は鰭膜で連続しない。臀鰭基底はやや長く，体長は臀鰭基底長の4.6～4.7倍。尾鰭は2叉する。体は銀白色で第1背鰭と尾鰭の縁辺は暗灰色。胸鰭と腹鰭は暗灰色。第2背鰭と臀鰭は暗黄色。
分 布：
フロリダ南部からブラジルまで。
備 考：
本種は同属のP. octonemusとP. virginicusに似るが，前者では分離胸鰭条数が8本であり，後者では臀鰭基底が短く（体長は臀鰭基底長の5.2～5.8倍），上顎後端が截形もしくは凹むので区別できる。 （松浦）
Distinctive characters：
Body oblong and compressed, body depth 3.2～3.3 in SL. Mouth inferior, posterior end of upper jaw rounded and reaching beyond posterior margin of eye. Snout blunt. Eye with adipose eyelid. Pectoral fin long, with 7 detached thread-like lower rays. Base of anal fin relatively long, its length 4.6～4.7 in SL. Caudal fin forked. Body silver-white; edges of first dorsal and caudal fins dusky; second dorsal and anal fins dusky yellow; pectoral and pelvic fins dark.
Distribution：
From southern Florida to Brazil.
Remarks：
This species is similar to P. octonemus and P. virginicus but differs from the former by having 7 detached lower pectoral rays (against 8) and from the latter by the long anal fin base (4.6～4.7 against 5.2～5.8) and the rounded posterior end of upper jaw. (Matsuura)
