Body elliptical and compressed. Preopercle with an enlarged strong spine at posteroventral corner and two small spines at anteroventral part. A small spine at lower part of interopercle. A blunt spine on preorbital. Posterior rays of dorsal and anal fins elongated into filaments. Caudal fin rounded, in adult upper and lower rays of caudal fin slightly projected. Body behind pectoral fin black, other parts yellow; pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins yellow; anterior part and distal portion of dorsal fin yellow; distal part of anal fin orange and posterior edge yellow; posterior edge of opercle orange.
Distribution:
From Georgia, Bermuda through Bahamas to southern Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is easily separable from other angelfishes in the Atlantic by the brilliant and distinctive coloration. (Matsuura)
