Counts：D Ⅸ, 21～24; A Ⅲ, 17～18; P1 17～18; SLL 47～49.
特 徴：
体は卵形で側扁する。背鰭棘は短く，最長の第3棘でも眼径の1.2～2.5倍。背鰭と臀鰭の前部軟条は長く延長する。尾鰭は湾入形。成魚の体色は淡灰色で背鰭と臀鰭の後縁は黒い。尾鰭の基部は黄褐色で後縁は黒い。若魚の体側には6本の黒色横帯がある。幼魚は体全体が黒色。
分 布：
ニューイングランド，バーミューダ，メキシコ湾をへてブラジルまでの大西洋西部。
備 考：
本種の幼魚は海面に浮かぶ枯葉に似ている。成魚はしばしば群泳する。 （松浦）
Distinctive characters：
Body ovate and compressed. Dorsal spines short, the longest (3rd) 1.2～2.5 times eye diameter. Anterior soft rays of dorsal and anal fins elongated. Caudal fin slightly emarginate. In adult body gray; posterior edges of dorsal and anal fins black; caudal fin yellowish brown basally, black posteriorly. In young body gray with 6 vertical black bars. In juvenile body black.
Distribution：
From New England, Bermuda to Brazil.
Remarks：
The juveniles of this species are similar to dark bits of plant debris. (Matsuura)
