Body ovate and compressed. Dorsal spines short, the longest (3rd) 1.2〜2.5 times eye diameter. Anterior soft rays of dorsal and anal fins elongated. Caudal fin slightly emarginate. In adult body gray; posterior edges of dorsal and anal fins black; caudal fin yellowish brown basally, black posteriorly. In young body gray with 6 vertical black bars. In juvenile body black.
Distribution:
From New England, Bermuda to Brazil.
Remarks:
The juveniles of this species are similar to dark bits of plant debris. (Matsuura)
