Body elongate and compressed, body depth 2.9 in SL. Preopercular margin smooth without serrations. Premaxillary groove slender, not interrupted by a transverse row of scales. Mouth strongly protrusible. Pectoral fin without scales. Second spine of anal fin longer than the third. Caudal fin forked. Body silver-white; edge of spiny dorsal fin dusky.
Distribution:
Both sides of the Atlantic; in the western Atlantic from New Jersey to southern Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is closely similar to E. jonesii Günther but differs from it by the higher body. Further studies are needed to clear up the ralationship between the two species.
