(Family):Body strongly compressed, covered with deciduous cycloid scales. Dorsal and anal fins large, flexible; their rays, when depressed, concealable in a membranous sheath developed along each fin base. A rather fleshy sheath batween base of pelvic fins and origin of anal fin, connecting posteriorly with anal sheath. Pelvic fin with one spine and five soft rays, longer than pectoral. Caudal fin emarginate or round; the principal rays 17. (Genus):One genus, Caristius. (Species):Eye diameter alomost as long as caudal peduncle depth. Upper jaw longer than eye, but not extending a vertical from posterior margin of orbit. Dorsal origin, postorbital margin, and pelvic insertion almost on a vertical line. Anal origin distinctly nearer to base of caudal fin than to tip of snout. Upper end of base of pectoral fin almost level with lower margin of orbit.

Off Suriname(7°52’N, 54°06’W; 7°53’N, 54°05’W).
Remarks:
This fish will be an undescribed and the 4th Atlantic species of Caristius. (Fujii)
