特 徴：
（科・属）： 全ての鰭に棘がない。背鰭と臀鰭は体の後部で対在し，それらの鰭の前方に遊離棘がない。腹鰭は腹位で5軟条。両顎の歯は微小で歯帯をなす。上顎の後端は眼下に達するが，著しく後方へ延長することはない。鱗がなく皮膚は滑らか。管状の側線がない。（種）： 眼上に棘がない。
分 布：
大西洋，インド洋，および太平洋の深海。
備 考：
1科1属2種。クジラウオ目 Cetomimiformes に属するクジラウオ科 Cetomimidae は，上顎の後端が眼の後方へ著しく延長し，腹鰭がないことにより，アカクジラウオダマシ科 Barbourisiidae は，皮膚に微小棘が密生することにより本科と区別できる。本属の他の1種アンコウイワシ R. bicolor は眼上に1本の前向きの棘があることにより本種と区別できる。 （上野・佐藤）
Distinctive characters：
(Family and Genus)： All fins without spine. Dorsal fin located above anal fin at the rear part of body, no semi-isolated spine in front of the fins. Pelvic fin abdominal, with 5 soft rays. Teeth of jaws minute in bands. Posterior margin of upper jaw not remarkebly extending beyond eye. Side of body without scales, skin smooth. No tubular lateral line. (Species)：No spine above eye.
Distribution：
Deep sea of Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans.
Remarks：
This family consists of 1 genus and 2 species. Other families of Cetomimiformes are distinguishable from this family by following characters：Cetomimidae have upper jaw which posterior margin markedly extending beyond eye and no pelvic fin; Barbourisiidae have rough skin minute spines grown. Another species of this genus, R. bicolor, is distinguishable from this species by bearing a spine derecting anteriorly above eye. (Uyeno and Sato)
