Dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins without spines. Pelvic fin abdominal and with 7 soft rays. Mouth large and oblique, subequal to head length. Posterior margin of upper jaw well extending beyond eye. One supramaxillary. Teeth on jaws long, fang-like, and not depressible in adults, and short and depressible in young. Lateral line in a single groove bridged over at intervals by fused scales. Scales on side small and cup-shaped with spines, not imbricated. Patches of rudimentary scales without spines on ventral surface.
Distribution:
Deep-sea of warm waters of Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.
Remarks:
Monotypic family represented by this species. (Uyeno and Sato)
