本属魚類は西部大西洋から本種の他に2種が報告されている。H. atlanticus は胸鰭が短く,臀鰭起部に達しない。H. mediterraneus は臀鰭軟条が通常10本で,鰓耙が23〜26本である(Woods and Sonoda, 1973)。 (上野・佐藤)
Distinctive characters:
(Family):Head with many ridges, mucous cavities between ridges covered with skin. Mouth large and oblique; jaws with minute teeth in bands. One supramaxillary. Dorsal and anal fins with spines. Ventral fin with 1 spine and 6 soft rays. One lateral line on side. (Genus):Anus locating just before anal fin. No scutes on Ventral midline between anus and anal fin. No step of height between spinous and soft portions of dorsal fin. Depth of body high, more than 40% of SL. (Species):Pectoral fin long, its tip extending beyond anal fin origin. Anal soft rays usually 9 and gill rakers 18〜22 (Woods and Sonoda, 1973).
Distribution:
Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, off Guianas and Suriname.
Remarks:
Two other species of this genus are reported from western Atlantic. H. atlanticus has short pectoral fin, its tip not reaching to anal fin origin. H. mediterraneus has usually 10 anal soft rays and 23〜26 gill rakers. (Uyeno and Sato)
