Counts and measurements：D 14〜16; A 4; C 9. Vomerine teeth 6〜8; upper jaw teeth 48〜53; lower jaw teeth 30〜39. Illicial length 43.8〜46.6％ of SL; escal bulb width 4.7〜5.4; least outside width between frontals 16.9〜22.9； longest lower jaw tooth 14.9〜18.8.
特 徴：
（科）：擬餌状体には付属物がない。口は大きいが，口裂はほぼ垂直で，後端が眼より後方へ達しない。蝶耳骨棘はない。両顎歯はよく発達する。下顎には顕著な縫合棘がある。鋤骨歯がある。皮膚は裸，あるいは広く間隔を置いた微小棘でおおわれる。背鰭は13〜17軟条。臀鰭は4軟条（まれに3あるいは5軟条）。（属）：クロアンコウ属１属。（種）：擬餌状体の後部と前部には側扁した鳥冠状突起がある。鋤骨の前縁はほぼ真っ直ぐ。皮膚上の微小棘はほぼ体全体に存在する。
分 布：
三大洋の熱帯〜温帯水域。模式産地-マデイラ。
備 考：
本属は5種を含み，大西洋からは2種知られる（Pietsch and Duzer, 1980）。 （藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Esca without appendages Mouth large, nearly vertical, cleft extending past eye. No sphenotic spine. Jaws teeth well developed. Lower jaw with a prominent symphysial spine. Vomerine teeth present. Skin naked or covered with widely spaced minute spines. Dorsal fin rays 13〜17. Anal fin rays 4 (rarely 3 or 5). (Genus)：One genus, Melanocetus. (Species)：Esca with compressed posterior and anterior crests. Anterior margin of vomer nearly straight. Minute skin spines present over most of body.
Distribution：
Tropical to temperate waters of three major oceans. Type locality-Madeira.
Remarks：
The genus includes 5 species, 2 of which are known from the Atlantic Ocean (Pietsch and Duzer, 1980). (Fujii)
