特 徴：
（科）：鰓裂は大きい。前鼻孔は上唇よりかなり上方に開く。背鰭・臀鰭・尾鰭は連続する。上主上顎骨を欠く。（属）：腹鰭を欠く。胸鰭条数は24〜27。背鰭は臀鰭より前方から始まる。（種）：両顎先端付近にそれぞれ1対の犬歯があり，下顎のものがより大。上顎歯は2〜3列で，前部内歯列は肥大扁平する。鋤骨上には湾曲した強大な1本の歯とその直後に10本前後の小円錐歯が1列に並ぶ。口蓋骨上には1列の歯がある。体は無鱗で，黒色の小斑点が散在する。
分 布：
大西洋。
備 考：
本属には本種と太平洋ハワイ産のS. caninaの2種が知られている。 （荒井）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Gill opening wide. Anterior nostril well above upper ilp. Dorsal, anal, and caudal fins continuous. Supramaxillary absent. (Genus)：Pelvic fin absent. Pectoral fin with 24〜27 rays. Dorsal fin beginning before origin of anal fin. (Species)：Jaws with a pair of canine tooth near symphysis, lower one larger than upper one. Teeth on upper jaw in 2〜3 rows, anterior teeth on inner row enlarged and depressed. Vomer with a large frang like tooth and about 10 small conical teeth; a single tooth row on palatine. Body naked with small blackish spots.
Distribution：
Atlantic Ocean.
Remarks：
Two species are known in this genus. One is the present species and another is S. canina known off Hawaii. (Arai)
