特 徴：
（科）： 前鼻孔は上唇の直上に開く。腹鰭基部は前鰓蓋骨下方に位置する。中基鰓骨上に歯がない。鱗がある。雄は交尾器をもつ。（属）： 尾鰭は背鰭と臀鰭に連なる。口蓋骨歯がある。両顎歯は密生し果粒状。頭部は無鱗。主鰓蓋骨上方に顕著な皮弁がある（図）。腹鰭は1軟条で糸状。胸鰭鰭条は21〜28本。鰓条骨は8本。（種）： 頭部は縦扁する。吻背面の後鼻孔間に短く強い1棘がある（図）。眼は大きく上側方に向く。鋤骨と口蓋骨上に狭い歯帯がある。主鰓蓋骨上に互いにほぼ直角に位置する2棘があり上部の棘は水平でより強い。前鰓蓋骨後縁に棘がない。第1鰓弓上の発達した鰓耙は3本。胸鰭基部直上に皮弁がある。腹鰭基底間は著しく狭い。体側鱗は脱落しやすい。

Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Anterior nostril just above upper lip. Pelvic fin inserted below preopercle. Basibranchial tooth patch absent. Scales present. Male with penis. (Genus)：A prominent skin flap above opercle (Fig.). Caudal fin connected with darsal and anal fins. Pelvic fin with a single ray. Palatine teeth present. Head naked. Teeth on jaws close, granular. Pectoral fin rays 21〜28. Branchiostegals 8. (Species)：Head depressed. A short strong spine on dorsal aspect of snout between posterior nostrils (Fig.). Eye large, directed dorsolaterally. Vomerine and palatine tooth bands narrow. Two opercular spines present, horizontal one longer and stronger than vertical one. No spine along posterior margin of preopercle. Developed gill rakers on 1st arch 3. Bases of pelvic fins close together.
