特 徴：
（科・属）： 背鰭は1〜2基。臀鰭は1基で基底は長く，臀鰭鰭条は背鰭鰭条よりはるかに低い。尾鰭は背鰭・臀鰭から分離する。下顎にヒゲがない。口は先端に開く。（種）： 上顎歯は3列，中央列が大きく針状で内側に曲がり，縫合部付近に1対の犬歯がある。下顎歯は2列，内列歯は著しく大きい。鋤骨歯と口蓋骨歯は1列で鋭い。
分 布：
大西洋，インド洋，東太平洋。
備 考：
Koefoed（1953）によれば本種の背鰭前部5〜8条が個体により分離するものとしないものがあるが，調査個体では分離していない。本科は1属2種が知られ，他のM. gracilisは南大西洋に生息し，両顎歯が微細な繊毛状歯帯であるため本種と区別できる。 （荒井）
Distinctive characters：
(Family and genus)： One or two dorsal and one anal fins; dorsal base long; dorsal fin rays much higher than anal. Dorsal and anal fins separate from caudal fin. Mouth terminal. Chin barbel absent. (Species)： Teeth on upper jaw in three rows; median row enlarged, needle-like teeth; a pair of enlarged teeth near symphysis. Lower jaw teeth biserial, inner row enlarged. Vomerine and palatine teeth in a single row.
Distribution：
Atlantic, E. Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Remarks：
Koefoed (1953) reported two forms in the species, ie. a gap in anterior portion of dorsal fin present or absent, the present material are the latter form. Two species are known, M. gracilis (South Atlantic species) differs in having minute tooth band on jaws. (Arai)
