体は骨質の輪でおおわれ,躯幹輪(鰓蓋の後ろから肛門まで)は11,尾輪(肛門から尾端まで)は34か35。Randall(1968)によると,背鰭条数は15〜18(通常17),躯幹輪は通常11,尾輪は通常35か36。体長(頭冠の先端から,丸まった状態の尾部までの垂直長)は130 mm以上となる(Böhlke and Chaplin, 1968)。体は黄色で,茶色の種々の大きさの小点が散在する。体には6〜7本の白色横帯が不規則な間隔である。眼を横断する1黒色帯がある。

Six or 7 white bands on body by irregular intervals. A black band acrossing eye.
Distribution:
Widely distributed in the Caribbean coasts.
Remarks:
Distinguishable from another larg species in this water H. erectus by its coloration and 18〜21, usually 19〜20 dorsal rays. A small species H. zosterae also differs by its 11〜14 dorsal rays and 31〜33 caudal rings (Randall, 1968). (Shimizu)
