特 徴：
体は縦扁した円筒状で，著しく細長い。吻は著しく長く，体長の約3分の1をしめる。尾鰭中央条は著しく延長し，頭長より長い。背鰭と臀鰭は体の後方にあって対在し，共に13条からなる。腹鰭は小さく，体のほぼ中央にある。体側鱗はない。背中線上に1縦列鱗があり，腹鰭上方から尾鰭基底に達する。側線は始部では体の背方にあるが，腹鰭上方からは体側を尾鰭まで縦走する。側線鱗は細長いが，尾柄部では稜鱗となる。吻に4本，躯幹部に10本の幅広い横帯がある。
分 布：
大西洋の両岸から知られている。
備 考：
本海域ではヤガラ科の魚には本種のみが知られている。 （清水）
Distinctive characters：
Body depressed cylindrical, extremely long. Rostrum very long, about 1/3 of SL. Medial caudal ray elongated extremely, longer than HL. Dorsal and anal fins on posterior body, opposite, each 13 rays. Pelvic fin small, about center of body. Body scale absent. A scale row on dorsal midline above pelvic fin to caudal fin base. Lateral line on dorsal anteriorly, on side posterior from pelvic fin to caudal fin. Lateral-line scales elongated anteriorly, scute on caudal peduncle. Wide bands on body, 4 on rostrum, 10 on trunk.
Distribution：
Known from both sides of the Atlantic.
Remarks：
The only known species of the Fistulariidae in this water. (Shimizu)
