Specimens examined：12 (SL 89〜219 mm). Depth：496〜850 m.
Counts：VAV 6〜7; palatine teeth 2.
特 徴：
（科）：体は5〜6縦列に並ぶ六角形の鱗状紋でおおわれ，各紋には落ち易い鱗がある。背鰭は大いに後方にあり，尾鰭前方で臀鰭と対在する。前上顎骨は突出できる。両顎歯は固着性。（属）：体長は体高の10〜20倍。鬚は頭部とほぼ同長か，それより短い。腹鰭は5軟条からなり，鰭膜でつながっている。腹鰭前部長は標準体長の60％以上。（種）：前上顎骨に1本の非常に大きな犬歯がある。3〜4本の小歯が下顎の先端にある。口蓋骨歯は2本。腹部腹側発光器は5〜8（9）個*。体側発光器の背側に6列の鱗状紋がある。
分 布：
世界の熱帯〜亜熱帯海域。模式産地-カリブ海。

Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Body covered with 5〜6 longitudinal rows of hexagonal, scale-like pigmented areas, each area with a caducous scale. Dorsal fin located far posteriorly, opposite to anal fin in front of caudal fin. Premaxillaries protractile. Teeth on jaws rigid. (Genus)：Body length 10〜20 times its depth. Barbel subequal to head, or shorter. Pelvic fins composed of 5 rays connected by membrane. Prepelvic length 60％ or more of SL. (Species)：One greatly enlarged fang on premaxillary. Three or four small teeth on tip of lower jaw. Two teeth on palatine. VAV photophores 5〜8 (9)*. Six rows of scale-like patterns dorsal to OA.
Distribution：
Tropical to subtropical seas of the world. Type locality-Caribbean Sea.
