(Family):Dorsal fin just behind head, far in advance of pelvic fin. Body covered with 5 longitudinal rows of hexagonal, scale-like pigmented areas, each area with a caducous scale. Upper jaw not protractile. Teeth of premaxillary and dentary rigid, large, fang-like. Each premaxillary with 4 teeth, the 2nd longest. Adipose fins present above and in front of anal fin. Barbel short, much reduced. (Genus):One genus, Chauliodus. (Species):Fourth premaxillary tooth longer than the 3rd. Postorbital luminous organ round. OA photophores ventral to scale areas of 5th row. Scale areas of 3rd row each with 2 small light organs. Dorsal orgin over 5th〜9th OV photophore. Predorsal length 18.6〜22.5% of SL.
Distribution:
Tropical to temperate seas of the world. Type locality-Gibraltar.
Remarks:
The genus includes 8 species (Parin and Novikova, 1974). (Fujii)
