特 徴：
（科）：肩部に発光器官をもつ。脂鰭がない。背鰭と腹鰭は体の後半部にあり，ほぼ対在する。（属）：脂鰭がない。1属1種。（種）：体は強く側扁し柔軟，体高は高く，頭長にほぼ等しい。背方と腹方の体の輪郭は幾分鋭い隆起を形成し，体は木の葉状を呈する。体に粒状の発光器はなく，尾柄の上下両縁辺は黒色の組織で縁どられ，これが発光組織と思われる。胸鰭は著しく小さい。体色は濃茶色で，鰓蓋域，肩部発光器官，肛門は黒色。

世界中に分布。
備 考：
本科中，腹鰭がない種は本種のみである。（清水）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：A luminous organ on shoulder. No adipose fin. Dorsal and anal fins almost opposite on posterior half of body. (Genus)：No pelvic fin. Monotypic genus. (Species)：Body highly compressed, flabby, body height subequal to HL. Dorsal and ventral edges of body forming rather acute keel, showing leaf-like appearance. No nodular luminous organ on body, upper and lower edges of caudal peduncle fringed by black presumably luminous tissue. Pectoral fin tiny. Body color dark brown; opercular region, shoulder luminous organ, and anus black.
Distribution：
Cosmopolitan.
Remarks：
This species is the only fish without pelvic fin in the family. (Shimizu)
