Snout short and rounded. Eye large, subequal to snout. Anus distinctly behind mid-body, total length 1.6〜1.7 times of preanal length. Number of preanal lateral line pores 70〜72. Mouth corner situated just below the posterior margin of pupil. Sensory pores on head and lateral line pores with distinct tubes. Supratemporal pores 3 (Fig.). Teeth small and pointed, and arranged in a line on jaws; no teeth on vomer.
Distribution:
Gulf of Mexico (type locality). Off Suriname.
Remarks:
From the Pacific, the occurrences of C. raniceps and C. scholesi are reported, the former has 6 supratemporal pores and the latter has smaller eye equal to 2.8〜3.2% in TL (4.5〜5.8% in the present specimens) (Kanazawa, 1957; Castle, 1968). C. cadenati, known from the Atlantic, has larger gape extending to below the posterior margin of eye (Blache and Bauchot, 1976). (Uyeno and Sasaki)
