Gill-opening ventral, larger than eye, and almost confluent each other at the surface of throat. Anus notably forward of mid-body, total length 3.7 times of preanal length. Head measured from tip of snout to anteriormost point of gill-opening 1/10~1/8 of total length. Pectoral longer than snout. Dorsal fin originates about a head length behind anus. Lateral line distinct, each pore with tube. Number of preanal lateral line pores 28~29. Scales oval and cover all the surface of body except lower jaw and snout (Fig.).
Distribution:
Gulf of Mexico, and Indo-Pacific. Off Suriname.
Remarks:
Additional 2 species of the genus are reported from the Atlantic. S. kaupii is characterized by the elongated scales arranged at right angles to one another, and S. oregoni has small gill-opening equal to half of eye (Castle, 1960). (Uyeno and Sasaki)
