特 徴
（科）：体は細く，やや側扁する。喉板がある。鰭に棘がない。腹鰭は腹位。尾鰭は深く湾入する。擬鰓がある。鰓条骨は23〜35本。側線がある。2個の上主上顎骨がある。前上顎骨は突出しない。（属）：最後の背鰭軟条は延長する。鱗は小さく，側線鱗は95〜120枚。腹鰭起部は背鰭起部の下か後方に位置する。擬鰓は良く発達する。（種）：側線鱗は103〜120枚。鰓弓下枝の鰓耙は10〜15本。
分 布：
本種はメキシコ湾，カリブ海，南米北部に分布する。
備 考：
西部大西洋からは本種のみが知られ，計数的形質により他種と区別できる。 （上野・藍澤）
Distinctive characters
(Family)： Body slender, more or less compressed laterally. Gular plate present. Fins without spine. Pectoral fin abdominal. Caudal fin deeply forked. Pseudobranchiae present. Branchiostegal rays 23〜35. Lateral line present. Suprapremaxillaries 2. Premaxillaries not protractile. (Genus)： Last dorsal ray prolonged. Scales small; lateral-line scales 95〜120. Orgin of ventral fin beneath or posterior to origin of dorsal fin. Pseudobranchiae developed. (Species)： Lateral-line scales 102〜120. Gill rakers on lower arm of 1st arch 10〜15.
Distribution：
This species known from Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and northern South America.
Remarks：
This species known from western Atlantic. This species differs from other members of the genus by its meristic characters. (Uyeno and Aizawa)
