Distinctive characters:
Anal fin absent. Pectoral long, its tip beyond insertion of pelvic when depressed, and 1.5 times of head. First dorsal spine long, its length equal to 4/5 of head. Upper margin of second dorsal notably concave around the middle of second dorsal base, and minimum height of second dorsal less than half of maximum height located in front of and behind the middle. Caudal filament elongate, longer than distance from tip of snout to insertion of pelvic. Eye large, almost equal to preocular length. Lateral groove deeply curved below first dorsal spine. Pattern of mucous canals on head is shown in the figure. Claspers trifid in young, bifid in adults. Breast darker than other areas and shaded purple.
Distribution:
Northeastern Atlantic from Iceland to Ireland. Newly recorded from the western Atlantic here.
Remarks:
Two types are observed in the shape of claspers, but treated as ontogenetic difference, because the further differences unrecognized. Identification followed the key in Bigelow and Schroeder (1953b). (Uyeno and Sasaki)
