Distinctive characters:
Mouth terminal. Fold along anterior margin of head slightly expanded near corner of mouth, but without leaf-like barbels. Nostril at tip of snout. The shape of outer and inner barbels is shown in the figure. Distance from eye to spiracle equal to eye diameter. Posterior margin of pectoral somewhat concave. Dorsal fins subtriangular. Anal fin absent. The arrangement of thorns on head is shown in the figure. No tubercles along midline of back. Pointed alar thorns near the outer corner of pectorals in matured males.
Distribution:
Off Suriname.
Remarks:
The present specimens are similar to S. dumerili in shape of nasal barbels and pectoral, but differ in shape of dorsal fins, arrangement of thorns on head, and no tubercles along midline of back, compared with the description presented by Bigelow and Schroeder (1948). These differences may be the result of the growth, but the characters aforementioned are quite constant among the specimens examined here. (Uyeno and Sasaki)
