Head expanded laterally, its width relatively narrow for the sharks of the genus; greatest maximum width of head 17.2〜22.9% of TL. First dorsal originated above inner corner of pectoral, and posterior margin above insertion of pelvic. Pectoral inserted immediately below 5th gill-opening. Anterior margin of head evenly rounded without median notch. Prenarial groove absent. Line between posterior margins of eyes on or slightly behind symphysis of upper jaw. Arrangement of mucous pores on ventral side of head is shown in the figure. Teeth on jaws strongly notched, and their edges without serrations.
Distribution:
Western Atlantic from New England to southern Brazil.
Remarks:
Gilbert (1967) recognized 2 subspecies in the species. S. tiburo vespertina is distributed in the eastern Pacific from California to Equador. (Uyeno and Miyake)
