Single dorsal fin without spine situated above the interspace between pelvic and anal fin bases. Seven gill-openings, the first largest and the seventh smallest. Snout pointed, preocular length about twice of internarial width. Spiracle small, slit-like. Eye without nictitating membrane. Caudal fin with a distinct subterminal notch, and several rows of enlarged scales along its upper margin. Teeth on jaws dissimilar; upper jaw teeth with cusps curved strongly inward; lower jaw teeth with elongated bases with some pointed cusps on each base; central lower tooth with a marked median cusp.

Remarks:
Monotypic genus. The genus Notorynchus is also characterized by seven gill-openings, but discernible in having rounded snout, small dark blotches on back, and supple body. (Uyeno and Sasaki)
