特 徴
（科）：鰭は尾鰭のみがある。吻に2本のひげがある。眼は外部からはみえない。外鼻孔は吻端に開口する。外鰓孔は一対で，左側の外鰓孔は右側のものより大きい。（属）：腹中線の皮褶は外鰓孔の直後から始まり，頭長は外鰓孔から皮褶までの距離の12.6〜15.6倍。（種）：体は前方で円筒状，後方で側扁する。舌上に2列の舌歯がある。前列の舌歯は10本で，前方の3本は基部でゆ合する。後列の舌歯は9本で，前方の2本は基部でゆ合する。口蓋背中線上に1針状歯がある。粘液孔は頭部に23〜25，躯幹部に52〜53，尾部に12個ある。全長は頭長の3.1〜3.6倍。肛門は体の後方にあり，頭長は尾部長の6.9〜8.1倍。体色は吻端で白く，しだいに黒くなり，頭部後半以後は一様に黒色。頭部腹面は茶色。

本種の舌歯はM. glutinosaに似るが，色彩等が一致しないので，メクラウナギ属の一種とした。 （清水）
Distinctive characters
(Family)：Only caudal fin present. Snout with 2 barbels. Eye invisible externally. Nostril opens at snout tip. A pair of gill openings, left one larger than the rigth one. (Genus)：A fin fold on ventral midline originates just behind gill opening. Head length 12.6〜15.6 of the distance from gill opening to origin of fin fold. (Species)：Body cylindrical anteriorly, compressed posteriorly. Tongue with 2 teeth rows; outer row 10, anterior 3 fused basally; inner row 9, anterior 2 fused basally. A canine tooth on dorsal midline of oral cavity. Mucous pores 23〜25 on head, 52〜53 on trunk, 12 on caudal region. Total length 3.1〜3.6 of head length. Anus on posterior portion, head length 6.8〜8.1 of caudal length. Body color white on snout, gradually becomes blackish, and uniformly balck behind posterior half of head. Ventral face of head brown.

Remarks：
It is identified as Myxine sp. The dentition of this fish is similar to that of M. glutinosa, but coloration and other characters differ from it. （Shimizu）
