Length 55 mm, height 63 mm, breadth 45 mm. Shell solid oval, inequivalve, attached to substratum by left valve. Right valve with distinct ears, with several dozens of slender radial ribs among which 10 or more conspicuously spinous. Surface alternate with white and pale red radially. Spines in white bands yellow, those in red bands dark red, longer distally. Left valve much deeper than right, with triangular area extending from the beak to the hinge line, with some 10 rows of long spines. Interior white, with ligament, teeth and socket beneath umbo. Ventral margin crenulated.

Remarks:
This species is close to Japanese S. anacanthus in general characters but the latter seldom presents yellowish coloration.
