Mantle cylindrical, 17 cm in length (28 cm at maximum), muscular, with a broad black mid-dorsal stripe. Fins sagittate, with fin angle 40°〜50°. Funnel groove smooth. Funnel cartilage inverted T-shaped. Arms muscular, with 2 series of suckers. Horny rings of arm suckers with blunt teeth distally and smooth proximal rim. Right ventral arm in male hectocotylized, shorter than the opposite arm, with 15〜25% of modified portion. Fleshy flap rather smooth.
Distribution:
South of Newfoundland, Florida to off Suriname.
Remarks:
This is the major target of traditional fishery in Newfoundland. The recent exploitation in the northwest Atlantic resulted in yielding some ten times larger catch than before.
