Mantle muscular, cylindrical, 7 cm in length (attains 30 cm in full grown stage), with broad sagittate fins posteriorly. Gladius presents as a dark streak along the mid-dorsum. Neck with 9〜10 pairs of nuchal folds. Arms strong with 2 series of suckers of which horny rings lack of teeth. Tentacular club with 19〜23 strong hooks. Two oval photophores lie on the intestine.
Distribution:
Epipelagic in warm-tropical regions of the world oceans.
Remarks:
O. borealijaponica in the North Pacific differs from O. banksi in having 25〜27 tentacular hooks, smaller intestinal photophores and less muscular mantle.
