A large species with black transverse bands on carapace and abdomen. Carapace smooth without carinae. Rostral plate rather pentagonal, its apex being sharply and narrowly pointed and ornamented dorsally with a short longitudinal ridge. No lateral process on free thoracic somites. Raptorial dactylus with nine to ten spines, and propodus with four movable spines at its base. Abdomen depressed and widened posteriorly, without any carinae; posterior margin of fifth somite and anterior and posterior margins of sixth somite fringed with sharp spines; in sixth somite spines arranged in two rows at median part of anterior margin; dorsal surfaces of sixth somite and telson rather scabrous with small thick tubercles and wrinkles; median part of telson raised as a longitudinal smooth, truncated ridge; two prominent spines and a group of several small spines at each side of margin; about 15 spinules on proximal half of lateral margin of telson.
Distribution:
West Atlantic from off Massachusetts through the West Indies ot Brazil, 30-50 m deep. Sometimes caught swimming at surface.
