アメリカオオエンコウガニ（Deep-sea red crab）
Geryon quinquedens Smith, 1879
特 徴：
甲幅15cm。甲は幅の狭い扇形で，全体にかなり盛り上っている。甲面は低い甲域に分けられ，やや鱗状の小顆粒でおおわれているが，大形個体ではほとんど滑らかである。額は鋭い4歯からなる。甲の前側縁には眼窩外歯を含めて5歯あるが，第2，4歯は一般に低く，特に第4歯はほとんど認められないことが多い。第5歯は鋭い突起状。甲の後側縁は長く，ほとんどまっすぐ。はさみ脚は大きくて長く，左右の大きさがわずかに異なる。腕節の内角には鋭い突起がある。歩脚は著しく長い。
採集記録：
水深310〜790m（3♂♂，1ovig.♀，3♀♀）。
分 布：
従来の記録はノバスコシア沖からメキシコ湾まで，およびブラジル沖。水深40〜2,100m。
備 考：
東大西洋産のG. maritae Manning et Holthuisおよび東大西洋からインド洋，太平洋まで広く分布するG. affinis A. Milne Edwards et Bouvierは水産業上の主要種で，西太平洋産のG. granulatus Sakaiも大形種である。
Diagnostic characters：
Carapace narrowly xanthoid, dorsal surface being longitudinally convex and shallowly separated to granulated regions. Front truncated, with four sharp teeth. Anterolateral border of carapace with five teeth including extenal orbital one; the second and fourth usually low, the latter being nearly obsolate in most larger specimens; last tooth rather tuberculated. Chelipeds slender and slightly unequal; inner angle of carpus strongly tuberculated; cutting edges of fingers thin and armed with sharp teeth of various size. Ambulatory legs slender.
Distribution：
West Atlantic from Nova Scotia to the Gulf of Mexico, and also known from off Cape Frio, Brazil, 40-2,100 m deep.
Remarks：
Of five representatives of the genus Geryon, G. maritae Manning et Holthuis from the Southeast Atlantic, G. affinis A. Milne Edwards et Bouvier from the East Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, G. granulatus Sakai from the West Pacific attain the large size and may have the economic importance.
