東大西洋産のG. maritae Manning et Holthuisおよび東大西洋からインド洋,太平洋まで広く分布するG. affinis A. Milne Edwards et Bouvierは水産業上の主要種で,西太平洋産のG. granulatus Sakaiも大形種である。
Diagnostic characters:
Carapace narrowly xanthoid, dorsal surface being longitudinally convex and shallowly separated to granulated regions. Front truncated, with four sharp teeth. Anterolateral border of carapace with five teeth including extenal orbital one; the second and fourth usually low, the latter being nearly obsolate in most larger specimens; last tooth rather tuberculated. Chelipeds slender and slightly unequal; inner angle of carpus strongly tuberculated; cutting edges of fingers thin and armed with sharp teeth of various size. Ambulatory legs slender.
Distribution:
West Atlantic from Nova Scotia to the Gulf of Mexico, and also known from off Cape Frio, Brazil, 40-2,100 m deep.
Remarks:
Of five representatives of the genus Geryon, G. maritae Manning et Holthuis from the Southeast Atlantic, G. affinis A. Milne Edwards et Bouvier from the East Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, G. granulatus Sakai from the West Pacific attain the large size and may have the economic importance.
