Carapace compressed and naked; cervical groove very deep and united with transverse hepatic groove at a rounded depression in front of hepatic spine; postorbital spine sharp and weakly directed upward; orbital and antennal spines not prominent, but distinct; pterygostomian spine broad at base and directed anteriorly. Rostrum strongly developed, and covered and fringed with soft hairs, being armed with 8-11 teeth, usually 9, on upper margin; postrostral carina strong, extending to posterior margin of carapace, and being deeply notched by cervical groove. Lamellate antennular flagella nearly as long as carapace. First to third pereiopods chelate; carpus of third pair thick for its proximal half. Second and third abdominal segments each with a transverse furrow, and behind it with a dorsal carina; fourth to sixth abdominal segments with a sharp dorsal carina throughout their lengths, ending in a terminal spine at sixth segment.

West Atlantic from the coasts of the Caribbean Sea to French Guiana, 31-622 m deep.
Remarks:
A close congener, S. vioscai Burkenroad, ranges from North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico.
